What to Expect

  • When the pulse of light is delivered, some patients experience a mild pinching or stinging sensation. No local anesthesia or pain medication is typically required; however, some patients may prefer to use a topical anesthetic when sensitive areas are treated.
  • Between treatments you should not wax or pluck your hair, but it is permissible to shave.

Treatment Plan

Pre-Treatment

  • Do not tan or use self-tanner4 weeks prior to treatment
  • Do not wax, pluck or tweeze for at least 5 days prior to treatment
  • Shave the night before your appointment. Try to get as close of a shave as possible.

Post-Treatment

  • Immediately after treatment, you may have redness and bumps at the treatment area, which may last up to 2 hours or longer. It is normal for it to feel like a sunburn. Cold compresses or icepacks can be used to reduce swelling or discomfort if needed.
  • You may receive a steroid cream for redness and swelling to be used once or twice a day until the redness has subsided. If you have any crusting, use an antibiotic ointment.
  • You may shower and use soap after the laser treatment. Use gentle cleansers (Cetaphil,CeraVe),lukewarm water and do not rub the skin vigorously.Skin should be patted dry and not rubbed.Deodorant can be applied to the underarms after 24 hours.
  • Skin moisturizers may be used immediately and makeup can be applied if the skin is not broken.Moisturizers will help the dead hair fallout of the follicle.
  • Avoid sun exposure and use a broad-spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunblock SPF30 or greater on the treatment area at all times to reduce the chance of dark or light spots.
  • If you have darker skin, you may be asked to use a bleaching cream before and after the treatments.
  • For optimal results, it is recommended that you do not use any other hair removal methods or products on the treated areas during the course of your laser treatments.
  • Anywhere from 5-30 days after the treatment, shedding of the hair may occur and this may appear as new hair growth. This is not new hair growth, but dead hair pushing its way out of the follicle. You can help the hair exfoliate by washing or wiping with a washcloth.

Follow-up Treatments

  • Follow up treatments are usually scheduled every 4-6 weeks or at another scheduled time depending on the site being treated.
  • Consistent treatments will produce the best results: 5-6 successive treatments are usually recommended (darker skin types may require more) to achieve the desired outcome, after which you may need a maintenance treatment 1 or 2 times per year.

FAQs

What areas can be treated with Cutera Laser hair removal?
Cutera Laser treatments can remove hair from all parts of the body including the face, legs, arms, underarms, and back. It can also treat sensitive areas like the chest, nipples, and bikini line.
How many treatments will I need?
Most areas require 3-6 treatments. However, the number of treatments required for optimal long-term benefits depends on multiple factors – hair thickness, the area treated and your hair’s growth cycle. Interestingly, not all hairs are actively growing at the same time and actually go through three distinct phases: growth, regression, and resting. Laser treatments work by disabling the hair that is principally in the active growth phase at the time of treatment. Since other hairs will enter this active growth phase at different times, additional treatments may be necessary to disable all of the hair follicles in a given area.
Are there any restrictions on my activity after treatment?
Following the treatment, you can return to your normal activities right away, but some redness may occur. The use of sunscreen is recommended on any treated areas exposed to the sun. In addition, your physician may recommend that you use a specially formulated skin care product line or prescribe a skin care regimen especially formulated for your skin type.
What are the possible side effects?
Although patients experience few side effects, the most commonly noticed are slight reddening and local swelling of the skin, similar to a sunburn. These effects typically last for several hours or less. In rare instances, blistering may occur. Consult with your medical professional for complete information on the benefits and risks of treatment.
How does Cutera Laser hair removal compare with other hair removal methods?
Shaving, waxing, and depilatory creams are all temporary methods which must be repeated on a frequent basis. The treatment offers permanent hair reduction for lasting results.
How does Cutera Laser hair removal compare with electrolysis?
Electrolysis is a tedious, invasive, and painful process that involves inserting a needle into each individual hair follicle and delivering an electrical charge to them one at a time. Electrolysis often requires years of treatments at regular intervals. By delivering light energy to hundreds of hair follicles at a time, the laser effectively treats an area in just seconds that would take over an hour with electrolysis.
